As one of the oldest music conservatoires in Europe, RIAM comes with real pressure, whether you're working towards a Local Centre grade exam or preparing to audition for a place on one of RIAM's degree programmes. If You're Preparing for a RIAM Grade Exam

RIAM Local Centre exams run from Elementary through to Grade 8 and Senior Certificate. A practical grade exam is made up of three set performance pieces, technical work such as scales and arpeggios, a sight-reading test, and an aural test. If you've already passed RIAM Theory & Harmony Grade 6 or higher, you're exempt from the aural and theory section of your practical exam, so it's worth deciding early whether the theory route makes sense for you. Your tutor can work through your set pieces, drill technical work, and build up your sight-reading and aural skills so exam day feels far more familiar.

If You're Auditioning for a RIAM Degree Programme

Applying for the BMus, Access Course, or another RIAM degree programme is a different process to a grade exam. You'll perform two contrasting audition pieces followed by a short interview, and separately sit a written theory paper and an aural entrance exam. RIAM recommends applicants have their principal study at a standard equivalent to Grade 7 with Distinction, and auditions are typically held in January or February. Your tutor can help you choose and prepare contrasting audition repertoire, work through past aural and theory questions, and get you interview-ready.
